Collection Development Fund
A library’s collection of books, magazines, journals, newspapers, DVDs, audiobooks and reference materials are the visible resources patrons see when they visit the public library, but collection development goes beyond these items and crosses the physical boundaries of library service areas.
In today’s world, many library resources can be accessed either online or through regional delivery service or Interlibrary Loan. Some of these options, however, delay access for library patrons, and in some cases individual libraries cannot purchase the materials sought. This program will purchase resources that can be made available to all member library patrons.
Examples of programs that may be supported through this fund include:
- A shared collection of downloadable recorded books that could be accessed by any patron in our seven counties.
- A shared collection of one thousand books in a language other than English.
- Access to a test preparation and career advice database.
- Update our shared collection of online electronic books in business and technology. It would allow us to try a revolutionary, patron-on-demand, model of title selection. (When an electronic book is used twice, it would automatically be “selected” for our collection.) Library users would directly pick the items we add to our collection.
If you and your family would like to make a major gift to support or endow a Collection Development Fund program, please contact Phyllis Davis, South Central Library System Director, 608 246-7975.
