Literacy Fund
The ability to read and comprehend information is the basic skill upon which all learning is based, and libraries play a vital role in furthering literacy skills in children and adults. Libraries are centers of literacy in the community, and provide valuable support to families in time of need.
Parents remain in family literacy programs longer than in other types of adult literacy programs, and we know these parents develop more positive attitudes about education.
The impact of family literacy programs for children is no less significant. School achievement improves, attendance is more regular, they are more likely to complete their educations, and they are even healthier.
Examples of programs that may be supported through this fund include:
- Provide training and materials to expand Madison Public Library’s Play Literacy Program (for preschoolers and caregivers) systemwide. Play Literacy supports the idea that children learn best through imaginative play, including the importance of reading and writing in everyday life.
- Systemwide training (and materials) in the MotherRead/FatherRead program, which combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment. Adults learn to be story readers, writers, and tellers in a group structure that supports their sense of worth and ability.
- "Every Child Ready to Read" training, which gives librarians the tools needed to teach parents of newborns, toddlers and preschoolers about their critical role as their children’s first teacher.
- Enhance the Summer Library Reading Program, which would double the number of special events and performers. These dollars also would fund production of a school visit promotional video, materials, and parent information programs.
- A collection of books for young children and their parents that would be available for loan to SCLS member libraries interested in conducting programs.
